Using Argus ONE on a network configuration with floating licenses
Introduction:
-------------
Using Argus ONE on a network configuration with floating licenses
allows Argus ONE to be installed on as many networked PCs as required
and used from any of those PCs. Argus ONE can also be used
concurrently by a number of users. The number of users which can use
Argus ONE concurrently equals to the number of licenses your
organization has purchased. As long as this number is not exceeded,
more users can start Argus ONE and use it from their own PC.
This document explains:
1. how to install the license manager on the "license server"
- and -
2. how to install Argus ONE on the classroom stations so that it will
look for the license over the network.
The floating license configuration uses the Aladdin NetHASP
technology which is comprised of two main components:
- the NetHASP key (network portability enabler) and
- the License Manager (LM) Server software
The License Manager Server allows the Argus ONE copies to connect
and communicate with the network portability enabler. The network
portability enabler (NetHASP, a red Hardware Key) must be connected
to the parallel port of the same PC the LM server will be run on.
This PC should be on the same network to which the users of
Argus ONE are connected. (many network protocols are supported
including TCP/IP, UDP, NetBios)
To inform Argus ONE that it is to be run using the network
Floating license configuration, an environment variable
ARGUSONE_FLOATING_LICENSE has to be introduced in the system of
all the PCs from which Argus ONE will be run. (Setting the
environment variable is explained below)
Installing the License Manager Server on a PC running Win 95/98:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1. Unzip the NetHASPUtils.zip file into a directory on the PC
you selected for installing the LM Server on.(Be sure to pick
a computer that is not often rebooted, since every restart of
the LM will terminate any open licenses.)(you may have
received the NetHASPUtils.zip file on a CD, or you may download
it from our web site at:
http://www.argusone.com/pub/Add_PC_Files/NetHaspUtils.zip
In it you will find the following files and directories:
- LMsetup.exe - Installer of the License Manager Program
- Monitor_Install - A directory containing the installer for
the Monitor program used to monitor the
number and location of users.
- NetHASP.ini - Optional Configuration file for the workstations
- Readme.txt - a copy of this file (the one you are now reading)
2. Run the lmsetup.exe
Once the lmsetup.exe program finishes the installation copy the
License Manager program (nhsrvw32.exe) to the Startup folder in
the Start menu
3. Connect the Network Portability Enabler (NetHASP Key) to the
USB (or parallel if you have a parallel key) port of the PC
you selected for installing the LM Server on.
(Again, be sure to pick a computer that is not often rebooted,
since every restart of the LM will terminate any open licenses.).
4. If you do not intend to run Argus ONE on the license manager PC
skip the next step. Otherwise, add the following line
to the Autoexec.bat file: (Use copy and paste to avoid typing
errors) set ARGUSONE_FLOATING_LICENSE=1
5. Save the Autoexec.bat file and restart your machine.
Installing the License Manager Server on a Win NT/2000/XP computer:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure you have Administrator privileges before commencing!!!
1. Unzip the NetHASPUtils.zip file into a directory on the PC

- NetHASP.ini - Optional Configuration file for the workstations
- Readme.txt - a copy of this file (the one you are now reading)
2. Run the lmsetup.exe
It will install the require drivers and the LM as a service.
3. Connect the Network Portability Enabler (NetHASP Key) to the
USB (or parallel in case you have a parallel key) port of the
PC you selected for installing the LM Server on.
(Again, be sure to pick a computer that is not often rebooted,
since every restart of the LM will terminate any open licenses.)
4. If you do not intend to run Argus ONE on the license manager PC
skip the next step. Otherwise, From the Control Panels open
the System control panel, Select the Environment Tab (on Win 2000
it is under the Advanced Tab) and add a new environment variable
named: ARGUSONE_FLOATING_LICENSE and set its value to 1
5. You may need to restart the PC depending on the version of Win
you use. WinNT 4, SP 4 and later should not require a restart.
Registering and activating Argus ONE
------------------------------------
Install and Run Argus ONE to register and activate your license
following the instructions on the screen. - (Required only if your
key is not already activated).
This ends the procedure of installing the License Manager
Installing Argus ONE on the Win 95/98 WORKSTATIONS
--------------------------------------------------
1. Install Argus ONE using the installer on the CD or the one you
downloaded from our web site at (http://www.argusone.com/pub/Aliases/Argus_ONE_Networks_Installer.exe)
2. Add the following line to the Autoexec.bat file:(Use copy and
paste to avoid typing errors)
set ARGUSONE_FLOATING_LICENSE=1
3. Restart the PC
Installing Argus ONE on the Win NT/2000/XP WORKSTATIONS
--------------------------------------------------------
Make sure you have Administrator privileges before commencing!!!
1. Install Argus ONE using the installer on the CD or the one you
downloaded from our web site at:
2. From the Control Panels open the System control panel,
Select the Environment Tab and add a new environment variable
named: ARGUSONE_FLOATING_LICENSE and set its value to 1.
This ends installation and registration procedures, you may now use
Argus ONE from the server and the workstations

Monitoring the activity of the License Manager Server
-------------------------------------------------
The License Manager Server window and menus enable you to see the
active protocols and the activity of the License Manager.
For additional information pull down the Help menu of the LM Server.
You could also monitor the number of users that are using Argus ONE
via the LM Server at any time. To do that use the Monitor program
provided which is included in the NetHASPUtils.zip file.
Using the Monitor program:
------------------------
At first install the monitor program by running the Setup.EXE
file located in the Monitor_Install directory which was extracted
from the NetHASPUtils.zip file.
1. Start the Monitor program
2. In the Protocols list (top left) double click the protocol
used (usually tcp/ip), the NetHasp License Manager box to the
right will list the active LM server and the IP it runs on.
3. Double click the line of the active LM server to update
the NetHASP Users list on the bottom of the window. (Note that
the list of users is not automatically updated and you need to
double click the LM Server line each time you wish to see an
updated list of the current users.
What happens if the Argus ONE crashes on a workstation:
---------------------------------------------------
If Argus ONE crashes on one of the workstations, its license will
not be freed unless EITHER Argus ONE is run again
FROM THE SAME WORKSTATION and performs a normal exit,
OR the LM Server is restarted (which will reset ALL licenses)
